The Art and Craft of Memoir. With that feat of manipulation they arrive at a truth that is theirs alone, not quite like that of anybody else who was present at the same events.
It is your story, your truth, a reflection of all that went in to making you who you are. Decide whether you want to write an autobiography or a memoir.
Autobiography generally spans your whole life and is based mostly on facts as you have remembered and researched them, while memoir from the French word for memory or reminiscence focuses on a story or two from your life, snapshots, often about an intense experience or a turning point. If you decide on memoir, which is what we are discussing here, then… Think small—keep your focus tight and narrow.
You are looking for a window into your life here, not the big picture. Be honest—write for yourself, not to please others. This is your story, your truth. Tell it as you saw it then, as you see it now, as you lived it and felt it. Shape your story— superimpose order on those half-formed memories.
